A tear to your rotator cuff can come about for a variety of reasons. For some of us it will simply be as a result of wear and tear as we age. Although this is an injury that is most common in the over fifties, it can also come about as the result of a fall or knock or even simply through a constantly repeated action such as throwing a baseball . This is why it is sometimes referred to as pitcher's shoulder. Surgery is most often restricted to the unlucky few who have either managed to get a full thickness tear or whose injury does not respond to conventional treatment. So what is the best type of torn rotator cuff treatment? First off you need to rest the muscles! You have to let the shoulder heal properly and if you carry on using it, you will slow down the recovery process and may even end up causing a serious injury. Depending on which of the cuff muscles you have managed to damage some of your shoulder movements will cause pain. The classic symptoms for a Supraspinatus tear for example are pain when reaching for anything or when lifting your arm above shoulder height, difficulty reaching behing you and trouble sleeping because the shoulder is so tender. If you continue to do the same movements that you find painful you will simply damage the muscle even more which could result in a full thickness muscle tear that will definitely need surgery. Next, you need to look after the pain and inflammation. This is usually done with anti-inflammatory drugs such as Ibuprofen or with steroid injections. Treating the inflammation will sometimes help with the pain simply because a lot of the pain in shoulder injuries is caused by inflamed tendons getting pinched. Ultra sound can also be used to help with the inflammation and help to improve healing. Once the muscle has settled down and movement has become easier it is time to start exercising the rotator cuff muscles to build up their strength. Torn rotator cuff treatment will involve small exercises with little or no resistance. These are small muscles that often suffer injury as a result of neglect. Most of us are unaware of how important these muscles are until we manage to injure them, but they are key to a strong and healthy shoulder, holding the arm into the socket as we lift and move.Just a small increase in the strength of the rotator cuff can have a dramatic affect on the overall strength of the shoulder. Rotator cuff specific exercises are needed. If you start working out with weights this is likely to simply work the major muscles of the shoulder and do nothing for the rotator cuff. Rotator cuff exercises will isolate these muscles waking them up, building their strength. You'll be surprised just how quickly your shoulder will get better once you get these muscles back to full health. But remember, rest and treat the inflammation before you start any rotator cuff exercises. If you need to modify how you work in order to rest your shoulder then do it. Working through a rotator cuff injury can only lead to further injury. And finally. It is worth mentioning that self diagnosis of shoulder problems is not a good idea. Different injuries need different treatments and it's worth getting it right just to avoid further problems.

Although this is an injury that is most common in the over fifties, it can also come about as the result of a fall or knock or even simply through a constantly repeated action such as throwing a baseball . This is why it is sometimes referred to as pitcher’s shoulder.

Okay, so you've hurt your shoulder but how will you know what you have done to it? To start with your shoulder is made up of bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons and cartilage. If someone had come up with the idea of the shoulder they would be winning prizes for the design. There are three seperate bones involved, the humerus, the clavicle or collar bone and the shoulder blade all feature. Seventeen different muscles plus the tendons, ligaments and cartilage. A couple of the most common injuries to people's shoulders are a rotator cuff tear and a frozen shoulder and it is best not to mix them up because the treatnments are radically different. With a frozen shoulder the capsule surrounding the joint becomes damaged, resulting in scar tissue forming. The capsule contracts and any movement of the shoulder causes pain. However, if you have damaged your rotator cuff then you will only get pain with certain movements. The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles that keep the shoulder stable and help with movement especially any movement that is above shoulder height. Your shoulder joint is a shallow ball and socket joint. Without the rotator cuff to keep the ball in place, we would dislocate our shoulder everytime that we threw or lifted anything. These muscles are easily damaged whenever we are working at height, lifting or throwing. The commonest injuries to the rotator cuff are caused by repetitive movements, knocks or just plain wear and tear as we age. I damaged the supraspinatus which is one of the four muscles in this group. Sadly it is the muscle that runs through a channel of bone on the acromion (part of the shoulder blade), so when it got injured and started to get enflammed I ended up with a shoulder impingement. The result was pain whenever I tried lifting my arm or reaching behind me with loss of strength in my arm. Tucking in my shirt, lifting a cup of tea, lifting anything off of a shelf became painful and as time went by it just deteriorated. As I continued using my arm the swollen, damaged tendon was now contracting whenever I used it and getting impinged against the bone. The gap that it normally moved through was now too small, so everytime I used my arm in certain ways it was catching on the bone and getting damaged more. So I had no choice but to rest it and wait for the swelling to subside. It is only then that you realise just how much you use your shoulder. You must not try to work through this because the pain is an indication that more damage is being done, if you mage to ignore the pain, you could end up snapping the tendon all together and then there is a whole heap of problems. Depending on the severity of the injury you may be advised to have surgery to free up the trapped muscle in order that it can heal. But Rest, treatment of the inflammed tendon followed by exercises to build up the rotator cuff muscles may be all you need.

With a frozen shoulder the capsule surrounding the joint becomes damaged, resulting in scar tissue forming. The capsule contracts and any movement of the shoulder causes pain.

Torn rotator cuff, shoulder impingement, shoulder dislocation, shoulder bursitis or frozen shoulder. Whichever of these shoulder injuries you are suffering from, shoulder exercise will almost certainly be somewhere in the treatment but you must make sure that it is the right sort of shoulder exercise and that you do it at the right time in the recovery process or you could end up with a bill for corrective surgery. With a rotator cuff injury, for example, it is important to let the muscles heal and any swelling to reduce before you start any kind of exercise. The rotator cuff is made up of four muscles which help to move, strengthen and stabilize the shoulder. They all run from the scapula(shoulder blade) to the humerus(upper arm bone) and help keep the ball at the top of the arm into the socket of the shoulder. They surround the shoulder forming a cuff of muscle, which gives the group their name. If you didn't have them the shoulder would dislocate very easily. One of the muscles, the supraspinatus, runs through a channel of bone at the top of the scapula. When it gets injured you can end up with an impinged shoulder where the inflammed tendon is getting snagged against the bone every time that you move it. This can lead to the muscle fraying and even snapping if you try ignoring it and carry on exercising. Trust me, that is not a result that you want. With a frozen shoulder, frustrating as it is, it is important to wait until the end of the freezing stage before trying any exercise as again you can cause more damage. Exercises for frozen shoulder are based around regaining movement, often working through the pain. If you did the same exercises for a rotator cuff injury, you would end up injuring yourself even more and spend even more time recovering. Worst case scenario is that you could turn a simple injury, fixed in a few weeks, into a bigger requiring surgery followed by several months of rest and therapy. So whatever the injury, it is vital to get the treatment right. Any Pain is usually a good indicator that rest is required and with nearly all shoulder injuries that is certainly right. Rest the joint and muscles, try anti-inflammatory drugs take Ibuprofen or get a steroid injection and once the inflammation is under control you can start exercising again, but always start with gentle exercises. If you have damaged one of the rotator cuff muscles, these are very small muscles that should only be exercised using low weights or resistance. To start with youwill probably find that no weight is best just using the natural weight of your arm to make the muscles work.. Never work through shoulder injuries of any sort. Rest first, let the healing start and then start to work the muscles and joint with the right shoulder exercises.

Background Aerobics refers to the type of physical exercise that involves aerobic routines, which refers to exercise that involves or improves oxygen consumption by the body, by the application of rhythmical movements. In particular, it defines the concepts of: Flexibility, which is the amount of movement in a joint or muscle that is attainable with the help of a partner or the use of a certain piece of equipment. Aerobics are usually performed to a background of music and is normally enacted in a group setting led by an instructor, who leads and guides the group to ensure continuity. However, it can also be undertaken as a solo exercise, and without musical accompaniment, although it is argued that this is not as beneficial as in the group setting. The benefits of aerobics are not only the development of physical fitness, but also the ability to either prevent, or at the very least, reduce the incidence of certain illnesses. The prescribed actions involve the participants performing a series of different dance-like exercises. In order to achieve the best results from the participants, aerobics classes are normally performed at different levels of intensity and complexity depending on the abilities and physical fitness of the performers. Many gyms offer the facility of aerobic classes. Each class is designed to accommodate a certain level of experience of the performers and is taught by a certified instructor with experience related to their particular class. Aerobic Gymnastics Aerobic gymnastics, also known as sport aerobics or competitive aerobics, refers to performing complicated and high activity movements to music, which originate from traditional aerobics, with a high level of perfectly executed movements which are defined as difficult. It combines aerobics, sports aerobics, coordinating gymnastics with music, dance movements and choreography of the entire performance. In order to introduce fairness, the performances are structured under various categories according to the age, gender and composition of the group, whether individual, mixed pairs or trios. The judging is based on the following movements: strength exhibited whilst stationery and in motion, jumps and leaps, kicks, balance and flexibility. There are three compulsory exercises: four successive high leg kicks, four successive push-ups, and a programme which begins with four jumping jacks, and leads into 32 elements of standing movements and patterns. Performers are allowed to choose up to ten techniques from following selection: push-ups, supports and balances, kicks and splits, jumps and leaps. However, the following maneuvers may not be included in the routines: handstands, tumbling, back flips, handsprings, or aerial somersaults. The performances are judged on the basis of the quality of the artistic content, the creativity exhibited, how well the performance was executed, and the extent of the difficulty of the routines presented. Sport aerobics is represented in competitions at state, national, and international levels, but is not established as an Olympic sport. Aerobics – How To Succeed

Leg cramps are something we all have suffered from at times, and something we all want to avoid. You are most likely to have muscle spasms in a foot, the side of your lower leg, in your thighs (the back of your thighs is most common), or in your calf muscle. They seem to occur at night, just when you need your rest and sleep. Muscle cramps usually affect the muscles of the leg. It is known as Khalli Vata in Ayurveda. There is a special term for the muscle cramps that affect only the calf muscles, and that is Pindikoveshtana. From an Ayurvedic point of view, almost all pains are caused due to vitiation of the vata dosha. Specifically in leg pains due to muscle cramps, the Vyana vata is vitiated. This is a sub-dosha of the vata which controls the involuntary muscles of the body. Considering having a bone density test done by a physician is a diagnostic test that will measure the amount of minerals left in your bones allowing the doctor to determine whether or not osteoporosis has set in. Medicines your doctor has prescribed can be the culprits too, of leg muscle spasms. Diuretics, anti-psychotics, birth control pills, steroids and statins are medicines that might be causes. Avoiding alcohol is always a good suggestion because alcohol will act as a diuretic and cause you to lose water, possibly leading to dehydration. Also, if you suffer from diabetes you may not have feeling in your feet and using steaming water could cause burns. Use your judgment or have someone with normal circulation and feeling test the water first. I read information from the University of Hawaii stating that ginger can boost your immune response by as much as 200%. It's also good for motion sickness and makes a great tea. Minor cramps can often be prevented by drinking enough water and stretching before and after exercise. The remedies may help prevent and relieve leg cramps, according to some health professionals. You can use a warm towel or heating pad to get relieve from pain. After soaking in a hot bathtub before going to sleep (did not feel too good on my legs), drinking a lot of water (cause me to wake up for other reasons during the night), and sleeping with a bar of soap (which I thought was crazy), the only remedy that actually worked was sleeping with a bar of soap! Natural, safe, and alternative remedies are often very helpful in getting rid of leg cramps and lessening their symptoms. Natural remedies can be very effective in getting rid of leg cramps. Natural remedies are available for just about any malady you may suffer. A natural remedy is a natural substance or herb that is prepared, processed, or formulated for its medicinal properties using only natural substances. In contrast, most Western health systems are based on synthetically produced medicines. Sometimes these often used conventional methods and medicines for treating our ailments are not the best choices. Sitting for long hours in front of the computer or TV can also lead to leg cramps. It is essential to have small breaks between working hours and eat the right food that will help you guard against this problem. If all the above said recommendations fail to work and if leg cramps still persist you must consult a health care professional to rule out any other serious problem.

The female lower body can be one of the toughest problem areas to fix. There are many exercises for inner thighs out there, but which ones get the best results? It's no secret that the lower body problem areas and trouble spots of women can be very stubborn and quite depressing. *Too flabby *Too fat *Very lumpy *Unshapely *Cellulite are all problems that can be visibly and permanently fixed with the correct exercises. Research shows that a high percentage of new comers who join the gym don’t last long enough to see any visible results. This is usually due to two main reasons. Firstly, the effort it takes to attend the gym regularly enough to get results is too much for most people to sustain on a day to day basis. Usually what happens is, once you join the gym you attend regularly for about a week or two, then you start skipping a day here and there and before you know it you are paying membership fees for something you never use. The second most common reason why many people stop attending the gym, is because they are not getting the results they were hoping for. They feel that they are working hard enough but the hard work is just not translating into visible results. It doesn't have to be as hard to achieve visible and permanent results as many women think. The correct exercises for inner thighs and other lower body areas are not required to be done at the gym. And that is the key. To get results from exercising, you must do the CORRECT exercises. Not exercising these muscles correctly can actually build muscle bulk making your trouble spots worse and more pronounced, totally defeating the purpose of exercising in the first place, all while risking the possibility of serious injury. To get visible results from exercises for your inner thighs and lower body problem areas, you must think outside of the normal steps most people will take to try to achieve this. The best exercises for your inner thighs focus more on movement and the proper contractions of the muscles rather than lifting heavy weights, thus eliminating the need for the gym. These exercises are highly targeted and specifically developed to be performed using no more than your own body weight as resistance, which allows them to be performed anytime and anywhere. You need to know if the exercises you are doing are the correct exercises and will give you good results, or are you making things worse with the wrong information. Being armed with the knowledge of how to perform the correct exercises can save you time, money and most importantly the disappointment of failure.

Congratulations you have just joined a new gym. You have made a commitment to losing weight, gaining muscle, and trying to improve your body the best that you can. You have done your research and have a training program in mind that will help you to reach your goal. Purchased gym clothes are in you new gym bag waiting for your first day. You arrive, change, and then make it out to the gym floor looking for the first exercise equipment that you will use. That is when you see them. It would be hard not to see them. The muscle bound hulks of the gym. They are picking up amounts of weight that you are sure would crush every bone in your body. They are moving from apparatus to apparatus doing exercises that you have never seen before, and have no idea what it is doing to their body. Each of them are talking about training strategies and muscle groups that sound like a foreign language to your ears. Plus, they have their special blends of training supplements that they are drinking throughout their workout, while you just have a simple bottle of water (and you felt smart bringing that when you entered the gym). It is daunting no matter how prepared you are to workout out next to the gym hulks. It is hard for you to be struggling with your fifteen pound dumbbell, while the hulk next to you is picking up a dumbbell ten times that heavy, as a warm up. Many times people will withdraw from the free weight section of the gym, and just use cardio equipment to avoid being around the gym hulks. Or they will still try to weight train, but use the machines that the hulks of the gym avoid. It is important, no matter what shape you are currently in, not to be ashamed or bashful about using the different equipment in your gym. There is a reason that the hulks are usually in the free weight section of your gym. Free weight training gives you a much better resistance based exercise compared with weight training on machines. Free weights require you to balance the weight, which helps muscle growth, and you can’t cheat with free weights and over use your dominate arm/leg, which means that you will get an even workout. Don’t be afraid to go over and use the free weight, no matter how little you are lifting. What you have to remember is everyone started getting the benefits of weight lifting at some point in their lives. The hulks were once mere normal looking people like you and me. Plus, the hulks are usually very helpful if you have questions about weight training. Remember they have already walked the path (maybe at an extreme level) that you are about to walk. They will provide tips and techniques to improve your own results. Just as you shouldn’t be afraid to use any part of the gym to train, you shouldn’t be afraid of using supplements, like the hulks, to get better results. Whey protein is an excellent product that will help you to gain lean muscle growth in your body. Your body uses protein to build muscle, and helping your body to have a high supply of protein will increase muscle growth. Muscle creation also burns large amounts of calories, which will help you to lose weight. You might not want to turn into a gym hulk, but you shouldn’t be intimidated by their presence. Nor should you avoid using their knowledge and products to your advantage.

A Program to Get Your Running Routine Back on Track http://www.article-content-king.com/article198511-A+Program+to+Get+Your+Running+Routine+Back+on+Track.html http://www.article-content-king.com/article198511-A+Program+to+Get+Your+Running+Routine+Back+on+Track.html#comments Wed, 12 Aug 2009 18:17:21 +0000 Latest Exercise Articles http://www.article-content-king.com/article198511-A+Program+to+Get+Your+Running+Routine+Back+on+Track.html Category: Exercise

Getting started on an exercise routine can be hard to commit to, which is why most individuals to be unsuccessful in being consistent with it. Experts at the Mayo Clinic recommend seeing a physician before beginning any exercise or weight loss routine since every person is different and may need medical treatment prior to beginning activity. Most experts also say that some heart and orthopedic medical conditions may pose risks to individuals performing anaerobic exercise. This includes any type of weight bearing activities. Assuming that an individual has been seen by their doctor and can move forward with activity, it is suggested to start slowly if they have not been exercising regularly. Commencing slowly with a moderate speed slow jog for 20 -60 minutes, hinging on each person's condition, is a good beginning. How to Deal with Challenges in the First Weeks Walking not only provides a heart rate increase, but it also augments blood flow to muscles and provides the catalyst for a higher metabolism. When getting ready for a sports such as a marathon, start with one full hour of vigorous walking (at a rate of about 4 to 4.5 MPH) for week 1 with 2-minute running intervals every 5 minutes. Personal trainers also suggest interval training for losing weight. If an individual has a considerate amount of excess pounds to lose and is experiencing aches in their feet, the problem is usually due to flat feet. Seek immediate flat feet treatment from a podiatrist before continuing. Flat feet treatment that is addressed immediately in one's exercise routine can prevent more severe foot issues from developing later. Meeting the Challenges of Weeks 2 Through 5 Head On The second and third weeks of the exercise routine should be focused on increasing the body's endurance. Providing your muscles with the vital oxygen they need during activity results in an increased ability to work out for longer periods of time. Whether strolling or sprinting, the heart will learn to pump more efficiently as it begins to more efficiently pump blood and oxygen to each muscle. For weeks 4 and 5, interval training should increase by running for 5 minutes and walking for 2 minutes. For beginners, keep up the activity for 30 minutes; advanced-level runners should continue for up to sixty minutes. If foot issues arise in this stage of training, consult with a podiatrist about possible plantar fascitis, a frequent ailment among athetes. These types of conditions cause swelling and ripping in the foot tissues. Ask the foot doctor about exercises for plantar fasciitis that remedy the problem. The best treatment is continuous therapy including exercises for plantar fasciitis. The Final Weeks Reap the Biggest Rewards If you wish to go to a competitive level, in the final stage of getting ready for increased athletic performance, or for those who are concerned with fitness is to run for 10 minutes and slow the pace for 1 minute. Beginners can now be considered as intermediate runners and should continue for 30-40 minutes whereas advanced-level athletes should do this for sixty minutes. Whether the goal is to lose weight or increase stamina, a running routine like this will raise the body's metabolism from the very first day. If foot pain continues to be a problem at this point and treatment has already been received, try using orthotics for running. These supports not only provide support and softness for superior comfort, they can avoid injuries by counteracting the effects of excess pronation.

Many people are worried about the consequences of having flat feet. The researchers at Footminders have found an ideal solution for flat feet problems. The orthotics, shoe inserts and arch supports from Footminders are recommended by many podiatrists to relieve this condition.
