The H1N1 (commonly referred to as “swine flu”) scare has made people a little more wary of public spaces. If you’re worried about staying healthy at work there are a few things that should really help you feel more at ease and more productive in the workplace. Wash Your Hands: One of the most basic ways to stay healthy and to help keep your workplace healthy is to wash your hands. If you wash your hands every time you use the restroom, after you sneeze or cough, before you eat, and any other time your hands feel dirty, you’ll be able to stay healthier and help your coworkers do the same. It is also a good idea to keep a bottle of hand sanitizer by your desk. Avoid Coworkers Who Are Sick: It may sound really basic, but sometimes coworkers who are sick don’t extend the courtesy of avoiding others in the workplace. You should take it upon yourself to discretely avoid them without being rude. Drink Water: It may surprise you, but a lot of health problems can result from simply being dehydrated. Most people don’t drink enough water. This is a big mistake. Water keeps your body regulated and free from outside contaminants far better than many drugs. It is advisable to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. If you exercise regularly, the ounces of water per day that you should drink should be half of your body weight. It is incredible what a difference this makes in your overall health. Take Breaks: Your immune system is much more vulnerable when your body is tired and overworked. Make sure that you rest enough to make things easier on your immune system. There are some excellent stretches that you can do while at the office. For instance, try a deep back stretch by putting your chest on your knees while sitting on your chair. Reach down to your feet and pull your chest as tight as you can against your legs. This will help your back to relax. Next, stand up and counteract hunching posture by extending both arms high over your head to extend your back. Breathe deeply as your lungs open up while doing this one. Finally, try a simple wall squat. Just put your back against a wall in the seated position and use your quad muscles to hold your body with your legs at a 90 degree angle for several minutes. Eat Well: Fresh fruits, vegetables, whole grains are always an important part of any diet. In addition to these, be sure to include plenty of healthy protein to help you build lean muscle. Whey Protein is one of the best sources because the isolate variety is 90% protein, it tastes good, and is easy to digest. It is an all-natural gluten-free byproduct of dairy and is used by exercise enthusiasts and professional athletes. Another excellent way to enhance your diet is to take a good daily multivitamin. This will give you the nutrients that you may be missing like Vitamin B12 and Vitamin D. By making these simple changes to your diet, your body and mind will be healthier and you’ll feel great at work.

We have heard so many times that the way to lose weight is to limit our calories, fats, and carbohydrates. The bad fats are saturated and trans fats. The good fats are monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats along with omega-3 fatty acids. If we eat too many bad fats we can be at risk for some diseases. While the good fats lower this risk. As weird as it may sound, our body needs some fat to work. The good fats lower the bad cholesterol and raise the good cholesterol. Good fats can be found in a number of healthy foods. Monounsaturated fats are in nuts, avocado, olive and canola oils. Polyunsaturated fats are in salmon, corn oil. Saturated and trans fats raise your bad cholesterol. These are mainly found in animal products. Trans fats are found in commercially packaged foods. How can we lower our bad fat intake and raise our good fat intake? When you use cooking oils use ones that are low in saturated fat and high in monounsaturated fat; canola oil and olive oil are good alternatives. Even though saturated fats are found in animal products use low-fat dairy products and trim the fat and skin off meats. Also, by avoiding commercially packaged foods you can avoid trans fats. We need the good fats in our diet. There are actually many health benefits. It has been recommended that we eat 7-10% of our calories in fat. We get important fatty acids, like omega-3 fatty acids which are found in fish, from the good fats. It is hard to get all of the omega-3 fatty acids your body needs from diet alone, taking a good supplement that include essential fatty acids is a good way of getting the proper amount. It is also important to take a sustained amount of omega-3 supplement, because it takes weeks for the tissues in your body to absorb the fatty acids. The good fats also keep our skin soft, give us energy, and most importantly deliver fat-soluble vitamins. The fat-soluble vitamins include Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin E, and Vitamin K. These vitamins help your immune system, give you good eye sight, help build strong bones, and make sure when you are cut that you don’t bleed to death. Fat-soluble vitamins stay in your system until they are needed. Along with getting these important vitamins from foods, you can get them from a good multivitamin. Multivitamins give us the vitamins and minerals our bodies need that we don’t get from our foods. Essentially it fills in the gaps. The best way of making sure you eat the good fats and avoid the bad fats is to read the nutritional label on the food. Look at the total fat on the label. Make sure it is low. The amounts of monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated, and trans fats. By reading the label you can make sure you are cooking with the good fats and leaving out the bad fats. Here are three tips to cooking with the good fats. When you use cooking oils, use nonstick cooking sprays, and canola or olive oils. Also when you are cooking meat with fat on it, trim the fat off and grill or bake your meats. If the recipe calls for coating the meat use breadcrumbs and bake it. Keeping the good fats and kicking out the bad fats will help your body to absorb essential fat-soluble vitamins found in our food and in multivitamins.

Reading the Nutritional Label to Help Lose Weight http://www.article-content-king.com/article201924-Reading+the+Nutritional+Label+to+Help+Lose+Weight.html http://www.article-content-king.com/article201924-Reading+the+Nutritional+Label+to+Help+Lose+Weight.html#comments Mon, 26 Oct 2009 13:35:11 +0000 Latest Nutrition Articles http://www.article-content-king.com/article201924-Reading+the+Nutritional+Label+to+Help+Lose+Weight.html Category: Nutrition

You have decided to lose weight. Great! The secret to losing weight is eating right and an exercise routine that includes strength training. That is the easy part. There are many things you can do to get your daily exercise in. You can go running, play sports, do exercise DVDs in the home, or go to the gym. The thing that will make or break your weight loss goals is your diet. Many people exercise everyday but they don’t watch what they eat and therefore, they don’t see the results they want. One easy thing you can do while shopping for food is to follow nutritional guidelines set by the American Heart Association. The American Heart Association along with five other health organizations recommends that we do seven things to help us get the nutrients we need. They say we should: eat a lot of different foods, eat foods mainly from plant sources, have at least five servings of fruits and vegetables a day along with at least six servings of whole grain foods, eat low-fat and low-cholesterol foods, and most importantly limit the amount of high-fat and sugary foods from our diet. Following these guidelines will help to create meals that have the right amounts of nutrients we need to keep our bodies going. Now you are at the grocery store trying to find foods that meet these guidelines. The easiest way to find them is to read the nutritional label. The government has said that all packaged foods must have a nutrition facts label on the package. There are five main things you want to look at on the nutrition label. Serving size. All of the other things on the label are based on this number. If the package has more than one serving, the number of calories, fat, carbohydrates, etc is based on one serving. So, if you eat double the serving size, you must double the calories, fat, carbohydrates, etc. The serving size also tells you how many total servings are in the package. One thing to be aware of, a serving size in the package may not be correct portions, so you may have adjust accordingly. Calories. Calories are energy, but if you eat more calories than you burn it turns to fat. The calories come from fat, protein, or carbohydrates. Another number next to the calories is the calories from fat. This number shows the amount of fat calories per serving. Experts say that 40 calories is low, 100 calories is in the middle, and 400+ calories is high. Looking at calories can help you manage your weight. Total Fat. This is measured in grams per serving. Total fat is then broken down into the various fats in the food: saturated fat, Trans fat, polyunsaturated fat, and monounsaturated fat. Experts recommend that we limit our amount of saturated and Trans fats. These are the bad fats. Carbohydrates. Most foods contain carbohydrates. The body breaks these down into simple sugars to give us energy. There are two types of carbohydrates: simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are mostly the bad carbohydrates. They are the refined sugars. We need simple sugars; however, we should get these from foods like fruit and milk. These foods have important vitamins in them that we can’t get from sugary candies. Complex carbohydrates are the starches. These are our grains. As with simple carbohydrates there are bad ones. The good ones include the whole grains, which help you stay full longer. On the nutrition label, it is broken down into sugar and dietary fiber. We can gain a lot of important vitamins from our foods--dietary fiber, vitamin a, vitamin c, calcium, and iron. No matter how we plan and read the nutrition labels, we still may not get the important vitamins. The best way to get those is to supplement your diet with a multivitamin. It will give you any vitamins and minerals you may be lacking in your diet. If you don’t get enough essential vitamins then your body won’t function properly and that will hurt your weight loss goals. So, next time you are grocery shopping taking a few extra seconds to read the nutrition label can save you many headaches when it comes to your diet.

Importance of Vitamin E and Vitamin K http://www.article-content-king.com/article201921-Importance+of+Vitamin+E+and+Vitamin+K.html http://www.article-content-king.com/article201921-Importance+of+Vitamin+E+and+Vitamin+K.html#comments Sun, 25 Oct 2009 22:15:11 +0000 Latest Nutrition Articles http://www.article-content-king.com/article201921-Importance+of+Vitamin+E+and+Vitamin+K.html Category: Nutrition

Vitamin E is a name for a group of fat-soluble compounds that have specific antioxidant functions. It also helps the immune system. Vitamin E works to protect vitamin A and essential fatty acids from oxidation in the cells. It also prevents the breakdown of the tissues by forming red blood cells and muscles in our body. Recent studies have found that Vitamin E can help prevent heart disease, cancer, eye disorders and cognitive decline. Vitamin E deficiencies are rare. People who cannot absorb fat are more likely to have a vitamin E deficiency. If you are not getting enough vitamin E your muscles will be weak and your retina will deteriorate causing blindness. To make sure you are not vitamin E deficient, the recommended daily allowance for men and pregnant or nursing women is 10mg, for women 8 mg. Nuts, seeds, vegetable oils are the best sources of vitamin E. You can also find vitamin E in eggs, milk, whole grain foods, spinach, asparagus, avocado, broccoli, kiwi, and mango. Vitamin K helps to for an enzyme needed for the blood to clot. If our blood does not clot, we would bleed to death. New research is finding that vitamin K also helps maintain bone mass. As with vitamin E, vitamin K deficiencies are rare. When it does happen, the body cannot absorb the vitamin or after long-term treatment with antibiotics. Those with a deficiency will most likely have bruising or bleeding. Since we all need vitamin K, men and women between the ages of 14 and 18 should take 75 mcg a day, and men and women age 19 and older should take 90 mcg a day. Most of our diets are not lacking vitamin K because it is widely found in most of our foods. You can find vitamin K in leafy vegetables (broccoli, spinach, leaf lettuce, parsley, cabbage, and cauliflower) and some vegetable oils. In order to make sure you are getting the proper amounts of vitamin E and K, taking a multivitamin is a good way to do that. It has the proper amount in each dosage. Multivitamins are a great way to fill in our nutritional gaps. No matter how well you plan your meals, you could be missing certain vitamins. A multivitamin will help you get the recommended amount of vitamins and minerals in case they are missing from your diet. Most of the vitamins in a multivitamin are water soluble, so the excess will be flushed from your system, while the fat soluble ones will remain until they are needed. Meaning that unless you are using vitamin supplements like candy that there is little chance of having too many vitamins in your system. A single good multivitamin will provide all nutrients and vitamins you need. Vitamin E is so important because essentially it is a super anti-oxidant. In addition it strengthens your immune system and prevents cancer and cardiovascular disease. Vitamin K is so important because if we get cut, it helps the blood to clot and we can begin healing. These vitamins are found in green leafy vegetables and vegetable oils. If these foods are not in your diet, make sure you add them because they have many health benefits. Also add a multivitamin to your diet. It will fill in any nutritional gaps you may have in your diet.

Cholesterol is basically a steroid found in the cell membranes and is lipid and waxy in nature. Blood plasma carries cholesterol, a product made by the liver, considered to be the most prolifically present sterol in human tissues. Since cholesterol does not dissolve in the blood and high levels of it can clog the blood vessels, cholesterol testing is very important. There are two types of cholesterol which can be put into simple terms as harmful and harmless cholesterol. The harmful one is Low Density Lipo Protein which circulates in the blood combining other substances and making the blood thick causing a heart attack. On the other hand the HDL cholesterol takes excess cholesterol to the liver and keeps a check on the blood not allowing it to thicken. This process avoids heart attacks. Cholesterol testing is being practiced in many prominent institutions and smaller institutions as well. The most important of them are the American College of Preventive Medicine and the American Association of Family Physicians. They follow the NCEP guidelines strictly for cholesterol testing. However, the American College of Physicians are of the opinion that there is an unwarranted cholesterol measurement in men and young adults. According to the NCEP program all persons should be tested for cholesterol once in 5 years. However, they insist that an accurate and precise measurement of blood cholesterol is important to avoid unwanted heart attacks. For this purpose the NCEP set up a Cholesterol Reference Method of Laboratory Network that helps control heart diseases due to cholesterol. Though cholesterol testing can be done once in five years for a normal person, it is highly recommended that patients with high cholesterol level, smokers, diabetics, hypertension patients and those who have crossed the age of 50 should have frequent check ups for cholesterol level. This results in the control of heart diseases and avoidance of heart attacks. Cholesterol screening in children is good but for those above 20 regular tests is not necessary. Obese persons are highly liable for cholesterol and their lipid profile should be taken early and regularly. If the testing results for cholesterol show a reading like 200mg/dl it is considered normal, 200-239mg/dl too is considered border level and needs caring. But when it crosses above 240mg/dl immediate action needs to be taken to avoid heart attacks. To maintain a perfect cholesterol count much care and attention needs to be taken in the intake of specific foods that contain excess amount of fat.

Many people are very concerned with the cholesterol level they have. It has been something that has been discussed for quite some time. Now people want to know what the real truth is behind the coconut cholesterol debate. There have been a lot of mixed messages when it comes to the effects of coconut on a person's health. Some have claimed that caution should be used when it comes to eating coconut, while others have been claiming the opposite, and have been considering it to be very good for you. A lot of the controversy is due to the way people are looking at coconut being consumed. In general it is like anything that has fat content and should be eaten in moderation. A lot of the benefits and risks that have been associated with coconut and cholesterol depend on the form of the food that is being eaten. If it is coconut oil that we are talking about, we can see that it is considered something that we should avoid using when cooking our meals. The same people that claim that this form of coconut should not be used for cooking have recipes posted that need coconut milk used to make them. Mind you they suggest a form of coconut milk that has a lower fat content is also what they recommend that a person use to prepare them. A lot of people assume that just because something comes from the earth it is automatically good for us. This is far from the truth as we see that coconut oil has super high levels of the bad, saturated fat in it. These percentages may be high, but experts still feel that these numbers are far less than those that are found in the trans-fats used in the foods that we buy in the grocery store that are already made. Trans- fats are the absolute worst in the experts minds. When looking at using coconut and the products that come from this plant, we can see that many of the recipes that have it in them also contain a lot of vegetables. With this said, we see that there are situations that it can be found to be a good thing to use, particularly if this is the way that you get your family to eat more vegetable products. Balancing out the amount of coconut cholesterol that is in your meals can be the key to using it.

You need to understand the cholesterol food chart to maintain a healthy lifestyle. It is more required for the people who have complaints about their cardiovascular health. The chart is about a diet plan so that the amount of cholesterol present in the food is limited to suit the particular individual. What is cholesterol and what does it do in our body? You need to know the simple facts about cholesterol, which is an essential component of our body system. The excessive presence of the LDL cholesterol or bad one can cause serious harm to our system. The HDL cholesterol or good cholesterol must have a minimum level of presence in our system for good health. Liver produces the cholesterol in our body which is present in the cells. Cholesterol plays an important role in the production of vitamin D as well as facilitates the transportation of vitamin A and E in the system. Many of the foods that we intake everyday have some element of cholesterol in them, which are commonly known as fats. The high cholesterol containing foods are animal food products with high quantity of saturated fats, the dairy items, eggs and the seafood. These products raise the LDL cholesterol levels in the system, which is harmful for people with heart complaints and diabetes. It is advisable to limit the intake of these products and the diet chart is prepared accordingly. Palm oil and coconut are also high cholesterol products and they should also be limited. Some food preparations are unsafe as they raise the level of LDL cholesterol and at the same time decrease the level of HDL cholesterol. This is caused by the quality of the cooking medium, which is usually a vegetable oil. This process generates trans fats otherwise hydrogenated fats. Food items like the baked preparations, snacks, some processed food and the fried food items are common examples. It must be discontinued to consume the trans fats known as saturated fats. It is better to use monounsaturated or polyunsaturated fats as medium of cooking. Fish of oily nature is a good example of polyunsaturated fat for the benefit of cardiac patients. It helps to follow a food plan with fiber elements in the food like porridge, fruits and vegetables, which are friendly elements to maintain secured cholesterol levels of the body. High cholesterol level may prove to be more risky for the cardiac patients and particularly in the old age due to the reasons of poor metabolism functions. Only the food variety with reduced amount of cholesterol should be included in the food plan and every individual should draw a personal cholesterol food chart for his specific use for living well.

Give Yourself The Gift Of Goji http://www.article-content-king.com/article201589-Give+Yourself+The+Gift+Of+Goji.html http://www.article-content-king.com/article201589-Give+Yourself+The+Gift+Of+Goji.html#comments Sun, 18 Oct 2009 12:22:30 +0000 Latest Nutrition Articles http://www.article-content-king.com/article201589-Give+Yourself+The+Gift+Of+Goji.html Category: Nutrition

The word is spreading that Goji, also known as the Wolfberry, has endless health benefits and is a true gift of nature. Goji comes in a few forms such as juice and dried berries and is similar to a raisin in taste and consistency. Certified organic Goji juice is the most effective because Goji is absorbed better by your body when taken in liquid form. It is free of chemicals, preservatives and is not mixed with another juice for enhanced flavor. I first learned of this little miracle juice when I took home a CD from the local health food store that explained its benefits and history. Fun ways to stay updated on health topics and learn about hidden gems like Goji are by gathering information online from reliable sources, watching interesting and informative shows on TV networks like Discovery Health and taking advantage of free reading materials and CD’s from your local health food store. Goji grows in South Eastern Europe and in Asia and wasn’t shipped to the U.S. until recently, even though its history dates back to ancient times. Ningxia Goji is the most pure and potent type of Goji juice. The first person to ship it here to the U.S. was Doctor Gary Young when he learned of its benefits. An Olympic swimmer from China came along next and admitted her secret to outperforming all of her competitors was drinking Goji juice. She had to let the cat out of the bag in order to protect herself from being accused of taking drugs! The word was out, and companies in the United States wanted in. Goji eventually graced the shelves of health food stores across America and in a few select grocery stores. It is easier to buy it today as it is more abundant, but you must understand that Goji juice is expensive to distribute and to buy. Some companies find that it is a greater benefit to sell less expensive, diluted versions of this juice, as it is more affordable and more likely to sell. Uninformed consumers can assume that these versions of Goji juice are just as beneficial as the real thing when in fact they’re not. You can find the closest form of Goji to the real thing at various health food stores if you know what you’re doing. The “good stuff” is only found in China. There are numerous reasons why you should at least consume one ounce of Goji juice every day (more if you’re feeling under the weather). I have gained many benefits from doing just that. As soon as I drank my first drop of this amazing super juice, the first thing I noticed is that my eyes became clearer. I was amazed at the clarity because I didn’t even notice that my eyes were cloudy until everything became bright and clear. The next thing that I observed is a general sense of contentment. I was relaxed, de-stressed and in a great mood. Goji improved my sleep-wake cycle. I sleep deeper and wake up more rested than ever before. I can also recall the dreams I had when I was sleeping which rarely happens. Blemishes on my skin disappeared one week after religiously taking my morning Goji shot. My skin started to glow and my fingernails were so shiny that it looked like I was wearing clear nail polish. Ladies, if you want to look beautiful, eat organic and take your daily dose of Goji! Goji helps your body rid of waste naturally and if taken along with eating organic (and perhaps a teaspoon of apple cider vinegar with mother) it will help you shed some extra pounds. I didn’t need to lose weight when I started drinking Goji, but I did have some unnecessary, unwanted meat on my hips that slowly began to disappear. Goji gets rid of that pocket fat that collects in certain areas of your body. My hips became narrower and if I gain weight, it will now be evenly dispersed rather than clumping into those trouble areas! These are just a few of the ways Goji has helped me. This juice works inside and out, optimizing the functions of your mind and body. Here is a partial list of the many amazing benefits of Organic Goji juice: · Balances skin tone and helps to reduce dry skin · Antioxidants help prevent aging · Reduces risk of cancer · Increases energy · Helps to maintain a stable mood · Improves metabolism · Regulates blood pressure · Cleanses your blood · Improves memory · Improves heart function · Fights Hepatitis B · Boosts your immune system · Lowers cholesterol · Helps regulate blood sugar level I’m assuming you’re ready to buy it, so your probably questioning what you should be looking for in an effective Goji juice. Here are some pointers of what to look for before you buy your “happy berry” juice: · #1 100% Certified Organic Goji berry juice · Get pure concentrated Goji juice that is not mixed with another juice so you’ll get the full effect. If you’re spending good money on your Goji, you don’t want it diluted with other juices you can buy for just a few dollars at the grocery store. · Do not fall for cheaper “natural” versions of Goji juice, as it will at the very least contain a preservative like Sodium Benzoate. This preservative is a carcinogen so it defeats the purpose of taking Goji in the first place. · You may choose Goji that is sold in a glass container vs. plastic because it stays fresher longer. Celebrities that swear by Goji juice: · Mischa Barton · Madonna · Liz Hurley · Mario Lopez · Paula Abdul · Lisa Edelstein

Cholesterol consists of a fatty type substance. Two opposite types of proteins carry the cholesterol around your blood stream. The two proteins that do this are firstly low density lipoprotein (LDL), which is the bad form of cholesterol. Then there is high density lipoprotein (HDL), which is referred to as good cholesterol. We will show you how to lower cholesterol without drugs. Lifestyle, genetics, a poor diet high in saturated fats all contribute towards a high LDL level. A high reading is treatable with conventional medicine called statins. Although if at all possible lowering the levels naturally is much more preferable with none of the side effects of medication. Rather than taking medication, changing your lifestyle to a healthier one can dramatically reduce your high cholesterol level. Having a lower fat diet and cutting out saturated fat is essential to prevent the heart disease. Weight loss, if overweight is also needed. Quitting smoking and lowering the levels of stress you may experience will also be very beneficial. In addition to this alcohol consumption must be reduced. Taking regular exercise is also a proven way to treat high cholesterol. Anything aerobic that makes your heart work harder is very effective; although care should be taken when embarking upon an exercise programme for the first time. Always consult your Dr first. Some foods have been found to reduce bad cholesterol in a variety of ways. Turmeric - A spice commonly used in Indian cookery, is very prolific at treating heart problems. Not only does it lower LDL levels, it increases HDL too. It is most effective if consumed at levels of 900mg twice a day. Fibre - A high fibre diet will cause stomach problems like indigestion and bloating. It is therefore better consumed in tablet form and is just as effective. Fibre stops cholesterol from going into the blood stream. Niacin - In high doses, 1, 000mg taken three times a day, this vitamin B3 will help the overall health of your heart by lowering all types of blood fats which contribute to heart disease. There are well documented side effects from taking the vitamin at this level for prolonged periods of time. Soya - Soya has been proven to prevent heart disease. It helps to raise the HDL levels and to stop blood clots forming. It contains a natural antioxidant so helps fight free radical damage to the heart. The only soy products of any use are fermented so include these only.
